Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora – The Sun-Kissed Succulent
We love a good name here at Bloombox. The Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora is also lovingly called the Flapjack Succulent. Before you get any ideas, this in no way resembles a stack of pancakes on a plate - not quite. You have to see beyond! Check out the paddle-shaped leaves and tell us those don’t look like individual pancakes fanned out. That’s how this little thing got its name.
Plant Personality & Aesthetic Appeal
Flapjacks display thick, paddle-shaped leaves dusted in a white powder that protects against intense light. Each rosette fans out in a symmetrical stack, the silvery-green foliage edged in coral red under bright sun. Cluster several in a shallow ceramic tray for a stylish centerpiece, perch one on a floating shelf to catch side lighting, or tuck it into a geometric plant stand. On a sunny windowsill or bathroom ledge, it elevates any space with its striking form and color contrast.
Growth Habit & Size Potential
The Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora is a slow grower. It also grows fairly compact throughout its life, possibly reaching 25 to 30 cm when kept indoors. The Flapjack is a flowering plant as well, and you may be lucky enough to see a flower stalk with tubular yellow blooms every three to four years. Regardless of the bloom, the Flapjack is beautiful as it is and is a lovely piece of decor. Since it does have slow growth, a small pot will suffice in the beginning. Moving it up to a bigger pot will allow for spreading rosettes and offsets.
Light & Location Needs
The Flapjack loves the sun! It can tolerate hours of bright morning and afternoon sun, which is said to deepen the redness of its leaves. If you have shaded balconies or windows, this plant will soak up enough light to stay compact and vibrant. Bright, indirect light will also do, but the colors of the leaves may look less intense. Do avoid keeping your Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora in dimly lit spaces because it will grow even slower and its leaves will lose its reddish tones, leaving it just a leafy green plant.
Care Level & Maintenance Tips
The Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora, like many other succulents, are easy care and drought tolerant. You only need to water it when its soil gets completely dry (that’ll be every two to three weeks). If you notice excess water on the pot after watering, best to remove it to prevent root rot. You can easily find a succulent mix for your Flapjack; otherwise, just give it good drainage and well-draining soil. Keep this succulent away from grabby kids and curious pets. The Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora is toxic if ingested due to cardiac glycosides.
Succulent Serenity for Your Spaces
Did you know that succulent leaves may contribute to a fresher atmosphere by moderating humidity and supporting gentle transpiration? Even though certain plants don’t necessarily make their way to top air-purifying lists or the sort, that doesn’t mean keeping them won’t provide you with some benefits. Interacting with easy-care plants improves mood and focus, helping reduce stress and giving you a sense of peace and fulfilment. Whether you’re breaking for a mindful breath or seeking a burst of visual calm, Flapjacks offers a resilient companion to enhance productivity, relaxation and emotional well-being.
