Key Benefits of Silver Sword Philodendron

Purifying and humidifying

Philodendrons are great at absorbing toxins from the air. Their leaves are covered in tiny pores which take in carbon dioxide and expel oxygen.

Tropical plants have also been proven to improve air humidity. If you are constantly in dry spaces like air-conditioned offices or suffer from respiratory problems, this plant will definitely help!

Silver Sword Philodendron Plant Care Tips

  • Like other Philodendrons, the Silver Swords prefer loose and well-draining soil, where water can easily pass through. The soil needs to be moist but not wet to prevent root rot.
  • Water it twice or three times a week during the growing season and reduce it to once a week in the colder months. Check that the top 1-2 inches of the soil is dry between waterings.
  • If you notice any dust or debris on the leaves, clear it with a clean cloth.
  • Place it in a bright area but away from direct sunlight. If sun rays touch your plant’s leaves it can burn quickly.
  • Tropical plants are used to warm environments so they appreciate temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. If you keep yours in the garden, it’s a good idea to bring them inside during the colder months.
  • It will also enjoy humid environments so if your home is dry, you can create a little plant community as they will increase air moisture. Installing a humidifier is also a good option.
  • During the growing season, feed it monthly with a fertiliser rich in macronutrients.
  • When you see roots filling out the bottom of the pot, it’s because they’ve become too big and strong and it’s time to repot your Silver Sword.

The Philodendron Hastatum

This Philodendron is also known as Philodendron Hastatum silver and Philodendron Hastatum silvery blue.

Where is it From?

Hastatum commonly grows in the eastern region of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro, a region that has suffered a lot due to deforestation. Luckily its increasing popularity is avoiding extinction due to domestic plantations and collections.

Good For You!

  • Air-Purifying: Because it can balance levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, some doctors recommend houseplants for parents of children with asthma and other respiratory problems.
  • Transpiring: Tropical Plants are great at replenishing oxygen and moisture in the air.

Is The Philodendron Hastatum The Right Plant For Me?

As long as you give them enough water, good soil and the humid conditions it needs, it is a straightforward plant to look after.

Is it toxic? It’s toxic if ingested. Keep away from nibbly pets and curious children.

Wear gardening gloves before you touch it.

How tall does it grow?

The leaves become more arrow-shaped as it grows and the plant can reach up to 2 - 3 meters high.
